Since we started as a small architectural salvage shop in the 1970s, sustainability has remained a significant part of who we are today. Whether it's giving vintage items a second life or designing new LED lighting, we're focused on offering a sustainable, eco-friendly selection that will stand the test of time. Find out how you can create a more sustainable home with our tips for earth-friendly updates below.
1. Install Energy-Saving Lighting
Give any space in your home an energy-saving refresh with LED lighting—we offer both integrated LED light fixtures as well as LED bulbs that can be paired with regular incandescent fixtures. LED technology saves you money and conserves energy, while offering ambient light for your space.
LED light bulbs use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting. Our LED fixtures and bulbs typically have a lifespan of about 20,000 hours. LED lights are designed to emit light in a specific direction, which maximizes the light ouput of your bulb and ensures it reaches your space effectively.
2. Opt for Restored Vintage Updates
We've always believed the most sustainable option is often the one already created. Our selection of revitalized antique lighting, hardware, furniture, and decor centers around giving these pieces a second life of beauty and use. Our team sources the best vintage finds from around the world, then our expert craftspeople restore them at our factory. From rewired antique lighting to refinished cabinets, we treat every vintage piece with care to ensure it continues to stand the test of time.
3. Refresh Your Space with Organic Textiles
Update your bedding and bath linens with organic options, which benefits both the environment and your family. Organic bedding is made without any harmful chemicals or pesticides during farming or production, ensuring a completely natural finished product that's both comfortable and made to last.
We revamped our entire bedding selection, 100% is now made with organic fibers and 81% is responsibly sourced. Choose from a variety of GOTS-certified or Oeko-Tex certified updates, from bedding to bath towels. Get more information about our new organic bedding and how it's made here.
4. Consider Eco-Friendly Furniture
Upholstered Sofas & Chairs
All of our custom upholstered furniture is crafted in the USA from domestic and imported parts by trusted manufacturers. When it comes to furniture, sustainable details matter, from the wood frame and cushioning to metal springs and clips. Many of our options (like the Hastings, Hawthorne, and Garrison sofas and Clinton chairs) are made at Precedent, a family-owned company in North Carolina where artisans incorporate sustainability into every process.
Each sofa is flame-retardant-free, and features durable recycled spring cushions. All padding used in the seat deck, outside arms and outside backs is made from 100% recycled polyester. Polyester fiber used on the inside arms and inside backs is made from 80% recycled material. Metal parts are produced from a minimum of 95% recycled steel and painted with lead-free paints, and the glue used in securing frame parts is water-based and uses no formaldehyde.
Responsibly Sourced Wood
We are committed to providing sustainable options to update your home, which is why 67% of all of our wood is responsibly sourced. Plus, the Colestin, and Cascade collections, Saddle stools, and more, are built in West Virginia using sustainably harvested solid wood.
Our Jasper outdoor furniture is crafted with Forest Stewardship Council-certified® teak, offering the best in durability and style with eco-conscious production. The Forest Stewardship Council® certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
5. Choose a Fair Trade Certified Rug
Add style and personality your home with consciously crafted accents. Our flatweave rugs are handmade in India at a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, which means they are produced according to rigorous standards that protect farmers, workers, and the environment. Our Oeko-Tex certified linen bedding is also made at a Fair Trade Certified™ facility in China.
For an easy outdoor update, our versatile indoor/outdoor rugs are crafted from PET, which is polyester made from recycled plastic water bottles. These rugs are GRS-certified (Global Recycled Standard). PET offers a green alternative for textiles because they require less energy for production than standard polyster and reduce global waste.
