Elevate your outdoor spaces with the beauty of our Essex LED Wall Sconce.

Inspired by the Northwest Modern design of John Yeon's iconic Watzek House, our new Essex Sconce is a lovely new addition to our lighting collection that will beautifully illuminate any outdoor space. Assembled at our factory in Portland, Oregon, Essex pairs solid brass with a slumped glass shade that is handcrafted by Italian artisans—and the use of handcrafted materials is part of what makes this sconce so special.

Set in Portland’s Southwest Hills, the Watzek House is a modernist gem that was commissioned by lumber baron and civic patron Aubrey Watzek in 1935. The home was designed by Yeon, a talented architect who championed a modernist aesthetic with a Pacific Northwest twist. Yeon also designed all of the lighting fixtures in the residence—and this isn’t the first time that his work has inspired our design team; our beloved Yeon Lighting Collection is a nod to a brass light fixture in the home that was crafted from a Japanese fishing buoy.

The original inspiration for Essex is crafted from a glass battery case and hangs by the courtyard entrance at the Watzek House.

Essex was inspired by an outdoor wall light at the Watzek House that Yeon designed from a glass battery case. We worked with Italian artisans—the same craftspeople who make the shades for our bestselling Willamette Chandelier—to create the Essex’s slumped glass shade to have the same visual effect. The slumped shades are made by pouring the molten glass onto a flat rectangular sheet and then draping it over an angular mold to achieve the final shape of the shade. A smooth, rippled texture occurs on the surface as the molten glass naturally cools and settles—ultimately, giving the fixture a brilliant, refracted light when illuminated.

Each slumped glass shade is carefully crafted one at a time.

Once the shade is formed, it’s removed from the mold and set aside to cool.

Once the shade arrives at our factory, it is paired with a solid brass frame that holds the glass shade and an integrated LED light bulb in place to complete the composition. The frame adds a heftiness that contrasts with the light and airy look of the shade.

With our signature finishes, you can customize Essex to match our wide range of exterior door sets and house numbers.

Essex is available in one size and nine finishes, including our classic Aged Brass, Polished Nickel, and Oil-Rubbed Bronze. In addition to the textured shade, Essex is also available with a pearl white shade which gives the fixture a more streamlined look. Essex is UL Rated Wet and suitable for indoor or outdoor use. We’re thrilled to count this design as another excellent energy-efficient LED option—one that produces plenty of light and will last for years to come.
