Vintage Finds: Lions & Tigers & Bears — oh my!

Rejuve’s Salvage & Restored Antiques Department is a realm of unique pieces and one-of-a-kind finds. We often marvel over a single something (a lamp or a pharmacy scale or a door knocker) that has come to us alone, after having survived against all odds through the decades.

Every once in a while, however, we track down a group of items that has survived the years together. And that is its own kind of marvel. Our new collection of Vintage Carnival Masks breaks all the rules of forgotten artifacts and comes to us this way: twenty handmade animal mascot heads, with enough variety to impress even Noah.

Found in a very old Portland-based costume shop that had been in operation for three generations, these masks run the gamut from garishly cartoon to startlingly realistic. Since their original creation in the 1920’s and ‘30’s, they have been updated and repaired, so the collection features materials and styles from nearly every decade. Perhaps the most unusual is the Lion, whose handsome mane is comprised of woven fox tails.

It’s hard to beat a collection of Americana like this, which combines whimsy and darkness in such an unexpected way. Enjoy the entire menagerie in the New Arrivals section of our Vintage Finds page.
