Food carts, local breweries and a thriving art scene are among the many things that make Portland great. But one of our city’s more noble attributes is our dedication to sustainable practices and environmental conservation. That’s why Rejuvenation has partnered with an LED manufacturer to provide customers with an environmentally-friendly lighting option.
Over the last 8 months, the engineers at Permlight, a California-based manufacturer of LED technology, have been working with our designers to create LED options for 12 of our most popular fixtures, including the Thurman, Jefferson, Lombard and Rose City.
“Some of our fixtures are reproductions of lights that are over a 100 years old, with Permlight’s help, we were able to introduce the latest LED technology without compromising the original design of the fixture, said Tony Penca, Rejuvenation’s lead lighting designer. “With Permlight’s help, we have an offering we can be very proud of and confident in.”
LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are more energy efficient than incandescent and compact florescent lights. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, if the country switched entirely to LED lights, over the next 20 years the U.S. could save $250 billion in energy costs, reduce electricity consumption for lighting by about 50 percent and keep 1,800 million metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the air.
Energy efficiency and the long life span of LEDs are the primary reasons Rejuvenation decided to offer them to customers. According to Permlight, one of their 10-watt LED lights used in a 6-inch Jefferson fixture, for example, could last about 30 years in a residential space, compared to a 90-watt incandescent bulb in the same fixture that would last only three to four months.
“This means our customers, especially those in commercial or public spaces, can spend less resources changing their bulbs,” said Tony.
Now that we have some experience, we plan to continue finding ways to incorporate LED technology into our existing products and those to come.
BENEFITS TO SWITCHING TO LED LIGHTS:
- LEDs shine light in a specific direction without using reflectors or diffusers, making them ideal for recessed downlights and track lights. Other types of lighting use reflectors to direct light, which requires more energy to create light that may never leave the fixture.
- LEDs emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. Incandescent lights can release up to 90 percent of their energy as heat into a room. Using an LED, which releases very little energy as heat, can translate into lower air conditioning costs.
- Unlike compact florescent lights (CFLs), LEDs contain no mercury so when disposed of, there is less pollution to the environment.
LEDs are cost-effective. Although they are initially expensive, the cost of an LED is recovered over time.
